Haslingden,
Lancashire
There's
lots to see and do in Lancashire. A hot
air balloon flight may be perfect for a
birthday gift or special celebration.
Haslingden is a small but busy market town
on a hill in the Rossendale Valley. It was
involved with silk and the mechanisation
of wool and cotton spinning and weaving
during the Industrial Revolution. There
is still a ‘Big Lamp’ from which (in the
past) all measurements in the town began.
Haslingden’s quarries have provided stone
paving for many famous places including
Trafalgar Square in London. Many 18th/19th
century buildings such as the Manchester
Road Methodist Church have interesting internal
features. Haslingden is the home of the
famous ‘Holland’s Pies’, which are still
made from the original recipe.
Local places of interest include “The Snighole”.
A favourite walkers’ venue is the The Grane
Valley to the west of Haslingden and north-east
of the West Pennine Moors. This includes
scenic walks and the Calf Hey, Ogden and
Holden Wood Reservoirs (information centre
at Clough Head). To the west of Haslingden
is the Helmshore Mills Textile Museum where
the processes used in the production of
textiles are demonstrated and some of the
machines that were used are displayed. A
mill shop has books about textiles and associated
gifts for sale.
