Steyning
is an ancient settlement in the Horsham
District of West Sussex. If one includes
consideration of the nearby Chanctonbury
Ring, it may be argued that the history
of Steyning stretches back to the Iron Age.
In terms of recorded history, Steyning boasts
Anglo-Saxon connections that include the
possibility that Ethelwulf of Wessex (father
of King Alfred the Great) was originally
buried there. Steyning is located on the
A283 between Storrington
and Shoreham-by-Sea.
It is also a short distance west of its
neighbour Upper
Beeding. A visit to Steyning might also
include a trip to Bramber Castle (first
constructed c. 1073, later version now in
ruins – sometimes open to visitors).
Other places in the vicinity of Steyning
include North End, Findon, Sompting,
Upper Cokeham, Coombes, Botolphs, Bramber,
Upper Beeding, Small Dole, Buncton, Wiston,
and Washington.
