Clitheroe,
Lancashire
There's
lots to see and do in Lancashire. A hot
air balloon flight may be perfect for a
birthday gift or special celebration.
The
ancient market town of Clitheroe has the
remains of a 12th century castle built on
a limestone crag on a 16 acre site. It received
its first charter in the 12th century. Schools
in Clitheroe include a 13th century Royal
Grammar School and Ribblesdale High School
and Technical College. The Town is reached
from the M6 and the A59 to Skipton. Pendle
Hill (557m) is east of Clitheroe and is
reputed to have had some connection with
the ‘Lancashire Witches’. Clitheroe
is situated to the north-west of Manchester
(30 miles) and north-east of Preston (20
miles). Low Moor, the early water-powered
mill (later Steam) built by the Garnet Family
but closed recently, made Clitheroe a cotton
spinning and textile manufacturing town
in the 18th & 19th centuries. The town
also manufactured plaster for the building
trade from the local limestone. It is well-known
locally for ‘Cowman’s Sausages.’
The town has a new Road and rail Interchange
which houses an art gallery in the railway
section. Clitheroe library was built in
1905 by The Carnegie Trust and extended
in 1090 into the adjacent building, where
once stood the Moot Hall/Courthouse now
a Grade 11 listed building. Local sports
facilities are provided at the Roefield
Leisure Centre, Bowling Greens and The Ribblesdale
Pool. The Roman Catholic public co-educational
school of Stonyhurst College in the village
of Hurst Green is also close to Clitheroe.
