Lancaster,
Lancashire
There's lots to see
and do in Lancashire. A hot air balloon
flight may be perfect for a birthday gift
or special celebration.
The
historic City of Lancaster is alongside
the southern bank of the River Lune. Lancaster
Castle is next to the Priory Church of St.
Mary, both being on the hill overlooking
the river. Panoramic views are seen from
the hill across to the west towards Morecambe
Bay and the coastline of Morecambe and neighbouring
Heysham. The remains of a Roman Bath House
and fragments of the 4th Century wall can
be see from the path leading from the castle
to the Old Custom House beside the river.
The Shire Hall in the castle is in regular
use as one of Lancaster’s court rooms
as well as being a busy museum. To the east
of Lancaster is the architectural attraction
of the Ashton Memorial Building and the
surrounding Williamson Park. The monument
stands on a hill on an extensive 54 acres
of magnificent parkland. The area includes
children’s play areas, picnic areas,
quiet woodlands, an Edwardian Tropical Butterfly
House, beautiful ornamental lake and Small
Mammal House. In the impressive Memorial
building is a visitor exhibition and viewing
terraces. The white intricate building was
built to the memory of the wife of the Lord
Ashton. The Judges’ Lodgings, is a
popular visitor centre as well as many other
stone built historical city buildings. The
Lancaster Canal travels south of Lancaster
and passes under the A6 continuing east
and around the city, crossing the River
Lune on the magnificent stone-arched Lune
Aqueduct. From late Spring to late Autumn,
the Canal Water Bus services begin from
near the A6 Bridge and continue north past
St Peter’s Catherdral (south) to Carnforth
along the lock-free section of the canal.
