Kirkham,
Lancashire
There's
lots to see and do in Lancashire. A hot
air balloon flight may be perfect for a
birthday gift or special celebration.
The
ancient market town of Kirkham is set in
a farming environment in the Fylde to the
south-east of Blackpool and north-west of
Preston. The town is believed to be pre-Roman
as the settlement called ‘Setantu’
and was also temporarily occupied by the
Romans on their way to Ribchester. The foundations
of the main road through Kirkham are believed
to be the Roman Road. It became a ‘Free
borough’ by Royal Charter in 1296
entitling it to hold a market and 5 day
fair twice a year. The semi-circular stone
otherwise named the ‘Fish-Stones’(slab
tables from 1683) from which fish used to
be sold can still be seen at the market
place. During the medieval period people
used to make rope, linen and a rather course
kind of cloth from home grown flax and hemp.
The Kirkham & Wesham Railway station
on the Blackpool / Lytham St.Annes line
from Preston is on the road into Kirkham
(B5192). The picturesque village of Wrea
Green is situated to the south-west and
the village of Newton-with-Scales to the
south-east of Kirkham.
