Longridge,
Lancashire
There's lots to see
and do in Lancashire. A hot air balloon
flight may be perfect for a birthday gift
or special celebration.
The
market town of Longridge, which probably
takes its name from Longridge Fell, is about
6 miles north-east of Preston. It is reached
from Preston on the A6 through the village
of Broughton, then the B5269 through Goosnargh
and Cumeragh. The village of Ribchester
is south-east of Longridge. The three Alston
Reservoirs are south of both Longridge High
School and St. Cecelia’s High School,
and west of College Wood. Longridge has
an outdoor market on Thursdays. Most of
the Victorian buildings in the town are
mainly built of stone from local quarries
and roofed with blue welsh slate. There
are at least 23 listed buildings, including
the Railway Station, St. Paul’s Church,
St. Wilfred’s Church, the Old Fire
Station, and the remains of Cramp Oak Mill
and Oakbridge Mill.
Prior to the rise of industry in the mills,
quarries and railway, this was mainly a
farming community. Stone from Longridge
quarries was used in the building of Preston’s
Harris Museum, Fulwood Barracks, Preston
Railway Station and dockland buildings at
Liverpool. Longridge Golf Club and cricket
ground lie to the north east of the town.
